Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, my largest and most immediate goal is to create a healthy growing space. To do so, I prioritize creating a personal relationship with my students and maintaining a positive and energetic environment during lessons. Lessons can be intimidating for many, but it is important to not view corrections and critique as an indicator of failure--rather, they provide potential to become a better player and musician. Practice assignments are given at the end of each lesson to make sure students know how to practice and have clear objectives towards which they should work.

In addition to weekly lessons, I prioritize student performances by offering regular studio classes, and by hosting recitals four times per year. It is important for students to showcase their hard work, as well as learn how to present themselves in a formal environment. I believe the confidence built through consistent public performance is invaluable, and it transfers into everyday social, educational, and professional situations.

Curriculum

All students:

I maintain a strong emphasis on technique, musicality, attention to detail, and practice methods. In this way, students can gain independence and the capability of learning pieces on their own without risk of injury.

Students under 18:

I primarily use the Faber Piano Adventures series, with supplemental texts and pieces assigned. Students will learn to read sheet music and participate in recitals. Students will also study music theory and learn the fundamentals of chord reading and improvisation. Student repertoire requests are encouraged, and these requests will be prioritized as long as the piece can be played safely and correctly.

Adult students:

Texts are recommended after understanding the student's level and goals. Lesson plans and the material covered is flexible, though with continued emphasis on technique and musicality.
